The Ministry of Technology and Science has announced major progress in Zambia’s national digital expansion initiative, with the commissioning of two new Airtel Zambia towers in Silverest, Chongwe. The towers, constructed by IHS Zambia, form part of a strategic public-private partnership (PPP) aimed at enhancing digital access and service quality nationwide.
During an inspection visit, Hon. Felix C. Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science, praised IHS Zambia for its efficiency in rolling out the infrastructure, reiterating the government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide. “You cannot expect what you do not inspect,” he stated, underscoring the importance of government oversight in ensuring timely and high-quality delivery.
Out of the 152 towers being built by IHS Zambia for Airtel, 40 are already operational, with 12 more expected online by the end of September. The project remains on track for completion by November 2025. In Lusaka Province alone, 38 towers have been deployed, including the two new Silverest sites.
The towers feature smart energy systems powered by a mix of solar, batteries, and generators, ensuring uninterrupted service while addressing issues such as dropped calls and poor connectivity. The Silverest tower, strategically located near the University of Lusaka, is expected to benefit more than 11,000 students with improved access to academic resources and digital financial services.
According to Mr. Collins Chomba, ZICTA’s Director of Universal Access and Services, 43 of the 51 towers planned for remote areas are already complete, with the remaining eight to be finalized by the third quarter of this year. An additional 80 towers are scheduled for construction nationwide in the fourth quarter, further extending coverage and access. With this progress, Zambia is taking decisive steps toward building a digitally inclusive economy, ensuring that reliable, affordable, and modern communication services are within reach for all citizens.
