The remains of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa’s envoy to France and Monaco, arrived at King Shaka International Airport on Friday, 10 October 2025. His return marked the solemn homecoming of a distinguished diplomat whose life ended tragically in Paris. Mthethwa, aged 57, died after falling from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. French authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The arrival ceremony was attended by family members, government officials, and mourners. A moment of silence was held as the casket was received. Family spokesperson Dr. Sifiso Buthelezi expressed emotional relief: “We did not come back empty handed – we came back with the son of the soil.” Before repatriation, the family performed a traditional Zulu ritual in the Paris hotel room where Mthethwa died. The act, described as “fetching his spirit,” reflects a deep cultural belief in restoring spiritual wholeness before burial.
From Durban, Mthethwa’s remains were transported to his hometown of KwaMbonambi in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The community prepared to receive him with traditional rites and public mourning. President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a Special Official Funeral, Category 2, honoring Mthethwa’s diplomatic service. The funeral is scheduled for Sunday, 12 October 2025, with the President expected to deliver the eulogy.
Mthethwa’s return is not only a physical homecoming but a symbolic restoration of dignity. His journey – from international diplomacy to ancestral soil – echoes the Zulu proverb: “Umuntu akalahlwa” – A person is never discarded.
