Russia supports Zimbabwe’s application to join the BRICS group. The statement was made by Russian Ambassador to Harare Nikolay Krasilnikov in an interview with The Herald, a partner of TV BRICS. “Russia strongly supports Zimbabwe’s keen interest in engaging with BRICS. There are several levels of involvement, and it’s up to Zimbabwe to choose its path – whether as an observer, an invited participant at the next summit in India or by focusing on joining the New Development Bank,” said the diplomat.
Krasilnikov added that Zimbabwe’s foreign policy, based on the principle of “a friend to all and an enemy to none”, fully corresponds to the values of the group. He also described the country as “a significant force on the global stage.” In addition to the topic of BRICS, the ambassador announced Russia’s support for Zimbabwe’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2027–2028.
“We value Zimbabwe as a responsible member of the international community – and we need Zimbabwe in the Security Council as a trusted and constructive voice,” the diplomat concluded. Earlier, the Zimbabwean side had already reported submitting an official application to join the group. In March this year, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Frederick Shava paid a visit to Moscow, where he stated that the republic is working to meet the requirements necessary for BRICS accession.
