Mozambican President Daniel Chapo on Monday opened the 60th Maputo International Trade Fair, calling it a gateway for international partnerships and a platform to accelerate the country’s economic transformation. The fair features more than 3,100 exhibitors, including 800 foreign companies from about 30 countries, with South Africa as the guest of honor. The event is expected to attract over 70,000 visitors during the week.
Speaking at the event, Chapo stressed Mozambique’s commitment to economic diversification, job creation and a transparent business environment. Marking Mozambique’s 50th anniversary of independence in 2025, the president described the fair as a milestone, urging international partners to deepen cooperation to help the southern African country build a diversified, inclusive and sustainable economy.
During the event, the Mozambican government launched a 40 million-U.S.- dollar fund financed by the World Bank to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The fund is expected to benefit around 15,000 SMEs in its first phase, with a particular focus on youth- and women-led businesses, Chapo added. The fair is scheduled to run through Aug. 31.
