Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga is representing South Africa at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women (GLMW 2025) in China. Taking place in Beijing, the two-day gathering aims to address pressing global issues, including digital gender divide, economic empowerment of women, and women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes.
Supported by the United Nations (UN) Women, this year’s meeting which will conclude on Tuesday, is convened under the theme; “One Shared Future: New and Accelerated Process for Women’s All-Round Development.” According to the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Chikunga will present South Africa’s progress report on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, highlighting strides made in advancing women’s representation in political, leadership, and decision-making levels in the country.
The department added that South Africa has demonstrated significant success in advancing women’s representation and integrating gender equality principles across state machinery, and in considering gender equality principles and women’s rights in a wide range of laws and policies. “The Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women will provide a valuable platform for women leaders around the world to celebrate progress in advancing women’s rights, exchange experiences, and chart the course for future gender equality development,” the department said.
