The African Water Investment Summit 2025 opened this week in Cape Town. Co-hosted by the African Union and South Africa, the summit seeks to bridge an estimated annual funding gap of US$30 billion while accelerating efforts to provide safe water and adequate sanitation across the continent, as reported by El Maipo, a partner of TV BRICS.
With South African President Cyril Ramaphosa among the attendees, the summit convenes African heads of state, G20 representatives, international investors, ministers, private sector leaders, and development agencies to mobilize capital for climate-resilient water projects. The gathering underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable water infrastructure and addressing Africa’s pressing water challenges.
It is held within the framework of the African Union’s Continental Water Investment Programme, approved in 2021, which seeks to expand access to drinking water and develop sustainable sanitation systems.
Across three days, delegates will take part in high-level panels, project-investor matchmaking sessions and will adopt a Water Investment Declaration intended to elevate the issue on both continental and global development agendas ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference.
