The Namibian government has allocated funding for the construction of new Radio Access Network (RAN) sites to improve ICT infrastructure in underserved and un-served areas across the country. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology’s (MICT) interim Executive Director, Linda Aipinge-Nakale, during a quarterly engagement with Chief Regional Officers in Katima Mulilo, Zambezi Region.
The initiative is a strategic move to enhance connectivity and accessibility for both mobile and broadcasting services, aligning with the government’s broader goal of decentralization and ensuring that all citizens can benefit from the digital economy. The meeting with regional officers serves as a platform to find common ground on these matters and provide updates on key ministerial projects.
This funding is part of a larger government commitment to ICT development. Past budget allocations have also focused on expanding network coverage and providing high-speed internet to remote communities, schools, and clinics through the Universal Service Fund. The MICT’s efforts are a direct response to the national objective of bridging the digital divide and are considered a crucial step toward achieving the country’s vision for a digitally inclusive society.
