The World Mountain and Trail Running Championships are set to take place in Cape Town in 2027, marking a historic moment as the event will be held in Africa for the very first time. This is reported by the African News Agency (ANA), a partner of TV BRICS.
The city was awarded the championships following a joint bid that highlighted its capacity to host major running events. The Championships, which combine two established events, are now held biennially.
Table Mountain will serve as a backdrop for the championships, scheduled for 6-10 October 2027. The event is expected to draw approximately 1,200 elite runners from over 80 countries, competing for individual and team medals in four senior championship races: Classic (up and down), Uphill, Short Trail, and Long Trail.
In addition to the elite competitions, there will be mass participation events, offering amateur runners the chance to experience the challenge of mountain and trail running in a world-class setting. Over 2,000 runners are expected to participate in these events.
A regional official commented that bringing the championships to Cape Town reflects the region’s growing status as a hub for major sporting events and the benefits such events bring to the local economy.
