Egypt has grown cotton in desert conditions for the first time, following trials in El Tor, South Sinai. Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk said the breakthrough shows how scientific research can be applied to farming, benefiting both farmers and the national economy. This is reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS. He added that the ministry will continue supporting researchers and agricultural projects aimed at raising productivity.
The Cotton Research Institute used modern irrigation and fertilisation techniques in the trial, which tested six cotton genotypes, including “Super Giza 86,” “Super Giza 94,” and “Super Giza 97,” along with three new strains. The first harvest was collected 127 days after planting. Officials said the varieties tested can tolerate drought, salinity, and heat, and plan to introduce the approach in other governorates while training farmers in updated cultivation methods.
