Namibia is hosting the Silver Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. This landmark recognises the vital role of women in building and sustaining peace. President Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah reminded the world that Namibia’s leadership in women, peace and security began long before the year 2000. It is rooted in the courage of Namibian women who fought shoulder to shoulder with men during the liberation struggle and who stood firm at the negotiation tables of the United Nations.
Resolution 1325 stands on four key pillars which are participation, protection, prevention and recovery. These pillars remind us that women are not victims of conflict but agents of peace. Namibia continues to lead by example. The country hosted the AU Peace and Security Council High Level Seminar that produced the Swakopmund Process, calling for greater representation of women in mediation and peace processes. Namibia has also established the International Women Peace Center to work with global partners in advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.
President Nandi Ndaitwah also highlighted the need to empower young women to carry this mission forward, ensuring lasting peace through intergenerational collaboration. She reaffirmed Namibia’s solidarity with women affected by conflict in Palestine, Western Sahara and across Africa, calling for peace, justice and human dignity. In her words, lasting peace cannot be built without the voices, hands and leadership of women and girls working together with men and boys at every level of society.
